IPTV is entirely legal as a technology. It is simply a way of sending a television picture over the internet, and the same technology is used by Israeli telecom operators. Legality is decided by the rights to the content: the provider must hold broadcasting rights for the channels and programmes it carries. Always check your provider's rights and comply with Israeli copyright law.

The price varies with the service and the length of the period. Israeli operators' TV packages typically run between ₪120 and ₪280 a month, and on top of that come separate sport and film packages plus set-top box rental. With IPTV Israel it costs ₪79 for one month, ₪229 for six and ₪299 for twelve, with no equipment rental.

Three things: a stable internet connection, a compatible device and an IPTV app. Around 10 Mbit/s is enough for HD, and about 25 Mbit/s per simultaneous 4K stream. As a device, a Smart TV, Android TV, Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, computer, phone or tablet all work. You need neither an aerial nor a cable socket.

Install an IPTV app on your device, for example TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro or Smart IPTV. Choose Xtream Codes login in the app and enter the server address, username and password you received with your order. Alternatively you can add the M3U link directly. The channel list usually loads in under a minute.

IPTV sends the television signal over your internet connection instead of by aerial, cable or satellite. The channel is turned into a digital data stream that travels from the server to your device in small packets and is reassembled there into picture and sound. Because the content runs over an IP network, it is not tied to broadcast times: catch-up and on-demand video work over the same connection.

An IPTV box is a small device you connect to the TV over HDMI that plays the IPTV stream. Well-known models are MAG, Formuler and Android TV boxes. The box is not compulsory: if your TV has a smart-TV system, or you use a Fire TV Stick, Apple TV or Chromecast, you install the app directly there.

IPTV Smarters Pro is a free IPTV app for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and some smart TVs. It is among the most used because it supports both Xtream Codes login and M3U lists, and because it has a programme guide, a film library and multi-device support. The app contains no channels itself, so you need login details from a provider.

There is no single answer, because needs differ. When comparing, look at four things: whether the exact channels you watch are included, how stable the stream is in the evening between 19:00 and 23:00, whether you get support in your own language for the whole period, and whether the agreement has a lock-in or automatic renewal. Test the service for a short period before buying a long subscription.

A set-top box is a device that receives the digital broadcast from the aerial or cable network and converts it into a signal your TV understands. In Israel they became standard once analogue broadcasting was switched off. With IPTV no set-top box is needed, because the broadcast arrives over your internet connection.

If the TV has an HDMI input but no apps, an inexpensive streaming stick is enough: Amazon Fire TV Stick, Chromecast with Google TV or an Android TV box. Plug the stick into the HDMI port, connect it to Wi-Fi and install the IPTV app. If the TV only has SCART or composite, you will also need an HDMI converter, but the picture quality will then stay at SD level.

An old aerial or cable set-top box is not suitable for IPTV, because it cannot receive broadcasts over the internet and cannot install apps. The exception is Enigma2-based receivers, where IPTV playback can be added. Otherwise an inexpensive HDMI streaming stick replaces the old box.
